Urban Paradox:
How do I get in?

Urban Paradox is an annual working session that explores the intersection of urban dance and theater. Curated by Iselle Claassens, it brings together artists, programmers, and talent developers to exchange knowledge and formulate recommendations. Each edition focuses on a pressing topic within the field, culminating in a published report that captures key insights and lessons learned.

The theme

The upcoming edition, titled How Do I Get In?, centers on accessibility and opportunities for urban makers in the wider performing arts sector. For emerging and independent creators, navigating the theater landscape can be challenging. There are multiple paths to take, but identifying the right starting point can be daunting. This session will open up a conversation with talent developers, programmers, and agents who will share their experiences, strategies, and practical advice.

The panel

To provide a well-rounded perspective on the challenges and opportunities in the urban performing arts sector, we have invited a diverse panel of experts, ranging from choreographers and artistic directors to talent developers and theater programmers. Each of them brings unique insights into the industry, offering valuable guidance to help you navigate your artistic career.

  • Lloyd Marengo – Lloyds Company
  • Dalton Jansen – Stichting BlackBirds
  • Melvin Fraenk – DOX
  • Bjorn Jansen – Berbee & Jansen Agency
  • Marieke van Dis – DVMSCO Agency
  • Tomy Huijbregts – Programmer at Theater Kikker
  • Femke Veltman – Programmer at Parktheater
  • Luc Delau – Summer Dance Forever

An interactive event

The event is designed to be interactive. Attendees are encouraged to contribute their perspectives and ask questions, making it a space for collective learning and discussion. The panelists will be announced at a later stage, but the session will be hosted by Iselle Claassens, with insights from Andrey Grekhov (Artistic Director of Sample Culture) and Jaïr Franken (Managing Director of Sample Culture).

Urban Paradox continues to serve as a crucial platform for bridging gaps between urban dance and the institutional theater world. By fostering dialogue and offering tangible guidance, it aims to empower artists to take their next steps with confidence.
