Mijn Wayang en Ik is a dance performance about how the past can continue to haunt us. About the tension that settles in the body, about exclusion and the pain of not being accepted. But also about the power of imagination and the longing to break free from what once was.

Last year, Afra Ernst flew back to Indonesia for the first time in eighteen years. Born in Jakarta and raised in the Netherlands since the age of six, she had long wondered why she and her mother left when they did. Her gut feeling turned out to be right: it was pure necessity. They had no choice. A shadowed past that Afra, no matter how hard she tries, cannot let go of.
Afra weaves together dance, poetry, and Indonesian visual language into a carefully layered performance. In her choreography, Mauri Kierindoongo, Christiaan Hendriksen, and Moze Naél (poetry) take the audience into a powerful internal struggle about learning to accept the shadows of your past. My Wayang and I makes you feel that we are always stronger than our shadows, and leaves every audience member with one question: do you dare to face yours?
